Getting the Iguana Email Notification to Work with Your Mail Server

In order for Iguana to communicate with your mail server, your email server settings must be properly configured. If your email settings have been properly configured but the Iguana email notification is still not working, some of the probable causes include:

• Your mail server may not be using the normal SMTP port 25, which is commonly used for email, or
• Your firewall, anti-virus or spyware software settings may restrict which applications can use SMTP to communicate with your mail server.

	If the Email Username and Email Password fields are left blank in your Email Server Settings, Iguana will not use SMTP authentication when sending email notifications.

SMTP (Simple Mail Transport Protocol) is the protocol Iguana uses to communicate with your mail server. The following procedure will determine if the computer that Iguana is installed on is able to communicate with the mail server.

	Type in the actual name of your host wherever you see host_name.

To test that the computer that Iguana is installed on can communicate via SMTP to the mail server:

• Open the Command Prompt window.
• Ping the host by typing in ping host_name as shown below:

• Verify that the servers connect. If the servers don't connect, try the next solution.
• Connect to the mail server using telnet. In the command prompt, type in telnet mail.host_name port_number as shown below. In the example below the normal SMTP port 25 is used.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>telnet mail.acme.com 25

If the servers successfully connect, a message is displayed:

	The message displayed will vary depending on what type of mail server you are using (e.g. Outlook Exchange, Surgemail, etc.). In the example below, the mail server being used is Surgemail.

• You can test the connection by typing HELP in the command prompt and pressing Enter. The command will probably not be echoed so you will not see it typed on the screen. The HELP command displays a list of available commands as shown below. It should be noted that although many mail servers will support the use of the HELP command, the output will vary depending on the mail server you are using.

• Verify that the servers connect. If the servers don't connect, try the next solution.
• Check your firewall and anti-virus software settings to ensure that they are not restricting which applications can use SMTP to communicate with the mail server.
