Adding the NK1 Segment to the Segment Grammar

The first step is to add the repeating segment (NK1) to the Segment Grammar of the PatientRegister message that you defined earlier.

To add the NK1 segment to the segment grammar:

• In the Workspace, locate the PatientRegister message definition, and double-click the Message Grammar link. The Message Grammar window appears.
• Drag and drop the NK1 segment from the Workspace to the Segment Grammar panel. Be sure to add the NK1 segment after the MSH and PID segments, since that is the order in which the segments appear in the message.

Adding the Repeating Segment to the Segment Grammar

• Ensure that the Repeating checkbox is selected, as the NK1 segment can appear repeatedly in the message.
• In the Repeats list box (located to the right of the Repeating check box), leave the value at 0. This indicates that the number of segments is unknown (and can be unlimited).

Ensuring the Repeating Checkbox is Checked

	Only specify a value in the Repeats list box if you know how many times this segment will be repeated.

When you select the Repeating checkbox, the NK1 segment in the Segment Grammar is enclosed in curly brackets. This is the HL7 notation for a repeating segment.
