Creating a New Message Definition

For each type of HL7 message you want to send out using the From Database Iguana component, you need to define a unique message definition inside your Chameleon VMD file. Suppose you want to generate a simple Register Patient HL7 message (ADT^A04) with the following segment grammar: MSH PID. In other words, it will contain a single MSH segment followed by a single PID segment.

To create a new PatientRegister message:

• Open Chameleon. The Start Page window appears.

• Under New, click Empty Project. The Chameleon interface automatically appears, showing the Message Browser.

• Click the Message icon in the toolbar. Message1 appears in the Workspace.
• Right-click Message1, and choose Rename Message.
• Rename this message PatientRegister.

Renaming a Message

	The message definition contains three main components: Message Grammar - The Message Grammar contains two components: (1) Segment Grammar - Represents the external HL7 format of the message; (2) Table Grammar - Represents the internal tables that you are mapping data to (in relation to Iguana, these would be database tables). Identity - Represents how Chameleon determines the message type. Transformation Script - If enabled in the Transformation window, this script is used to transform an HL7 message from its original format into the final desired output using Python.
