Examining the Full Tree Validation Algorithm

This section illustrates what happens when you convert an HL7 message into XML using the Full Tree Validation algorithm. When you convert a message using the Full Tree Validation translation scheme, only the segments in your segment grammar will be converted into XML.

	Before starting, download this sample VMD file that you will use to perform the steps in this section.

To example the full tree validation scheme:

• Open the sample VMD file you downloaded. Chameleon opens.
• Examine the VMD's Workspace. You will notice that under Segments, there are six segments (GT1, IN1, MSH, NK1, PID and PV1).

Examining the Segments in the Workspace

• In the Workspace, double-click Message Grammar. You will notice only two segments (MSH, PID) in the Segment Grammar panel. Since these are the only segments presently in the grammar, these are the only ones that will be converted when you use the Full Tree Parse scheme.
• Click the XML icon in the toolbar. The XML Translation window appears.
• Copy and paste the following message into the top pane of the XML Translation window.

• Click the Change button. The Options window appears.
• In the XML Translation Scheme drop-down menu, choose Full Tree Validation and click OK.

• In the XML Translation window, click the Translate button. You will notice that only the segments in the VMD's segment grammar have been converted to XML.
