Message Control IDThe key concept in the ACK protocol is the Message Control ID. This is a unique number that every HL7 message has in field 10 of its MSH segment. A valid HL7 ACK will echo this ID back in the second field of its MSA segment. This diagram show a typical ACK message with the important fields labelled:  ACK Message You will notice that it consists of two segments:
