Performing the Upgrade

Important Changes

Before upgrading your current installation, please make note of the following changes:

  • All Chameleon versions 4.0 and later have a different installation directory structure. To learn more about the new directory structure and how it might affect your upgrade, please see What's New in Chameleon 4.0?. That section details important changes you'll find in versions 4.0 and later. For details on all the changes in Chameleon since the last release, also refer to the Chameleon Change Log.
  • The "legacy" LLP networking components (found in versions prior to 3.3.146) have been re-added to the standard installation starting in version 4.5.1 to help customers with older C++ or Java applications still in circulation. This makes it easier for customers who have significant "legacy" code bases to upgrade to the latest version of Chameleon.
  • However, since these components are considered "legacy" and have since been replaced with new LLP networking components (found in versions 3.3.146 and above), iNTERFACEWARE cannot offer support for these components should you encounter problems with your applications. To avoid any issues, you should plan to migrate to the new components in the near future.
  • If you are creating a new application, or upgrading your "legacy" application, please use the networking components described under Chameleon Networking Components.

To upgrade Chameleon in Unix:

  • If you are installing Chameleon on a Linux-based system, first find the gcc compiler version that your system is currently using, otherwise, skip to the next step. For example:
gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 3.4.6 (Gentoo 3.4.6-r2, ssp-3.4.6-1.0, pie-8.7.10)

The above command will return the version of the gcc compiler you are using, but may not work on all Unix-based systems. Note that you must be using gcc compiler version 3.4 or above to install Chameleon on a Linux machine.

Available Chameleon Versions Shown in Internet Explorer

  • Unpack the tarball on the server you wish to deploy it on. The tarball unpacks the contents into a directory called chameleon. For example:
tar -xvzf chameleon_linux_4_1_1_gcc-3_4.tar.gz

  • Go to the directory that you installed Chameleon on. For example:
cd chameleon

  • Verify that everything unzipped properly on your system by checking the contents of the applicable directory. For example, typing ls checks the contents of the directory:
ls
CHM  admin  bin  java  lib  python_lib

  • Set the following variables if the install path has been altered from the original installation. An example is provided below:
export CHM_PYTHON_LIB_PATH=/home/user/chameleon/python_lib

export CHM_PATH=/home/user/chameleon

export CHM_PLATFORM=makefile.linux

Note that you do not have to register Chameleon or set the expiry date again after upgrading.
