Segment Outbound Scripts

Segment Outbound Scripts manipulate data at the segment field level. This is useful for modifying the raw string data that will be inserted into an outgoing message.

	If a segment is repeated more than once in a message, any Segment Outbound Script defined for that segment is executed for each repetition of the segment.

To define a Segment Outbound Script:

• In the Workspace, double-click the Segment to which you want to add a script. The Segment Definition window appears. In this example, a segment outbound script is being added to the MSH segment:

• In the Outbound Script column, click the ... (ellipsis) button in the row you want to edit. In the above example, the Message Type row is being edited.
• In the Editing Script window, type the segment script that you want to add, and click OK.

The script is displayed in the Segment Definition Window.

The following predefined variables and functions are available for use in Segment Outbound Scripts:

• The value variable represents the first subfield of the field for which the script is defined. This variable is always a string.
• The field variable provides access to all of the subfields of the field for which the script is defined. field also provides methods that perform operations on these subfields.
• The environment variable specifies methods that enable you to connect to a database or convert and format date/time values.
• Delimiter functions enable you to access the field separator, escape and repeat characters that have been defined in the Message Delimiters tab of the Options window.
