Setting Up the Message Grammar

The message grammar for this new message definition uses the same segment grammar and table grammar as the message definition you created in Step 2. To create the message grammar for the new message:

• In the Workspace, locate the message definition that you just created, and double-click Message Grammar. The Message Grammar window appears.
• Locate the PID (Patient Identification) segment. Drag it from the Workspace and drop it into the Segment Grammar panel.
• In the Workspace, in the Tables section, locate the Patient table. Drag it from the Workspace and drop it into the Table Grammar panel.
• In the Table Grammar panel, double-click Patient (Patient Demographics). An Information dialog window appears, reminding you that you have to first set the grammar root.
• Click OK. The Grammar Root Selection window appears.
• Choose Message to be the grammar root.
• The Mapping window opens for the PatientDischarge table. It should display a copy of the mappings you used when creating the PatientRegister message definition. You can leave these definitions as is.
• Ignore the EVN and PV1 segments, as you are not interested in those segments. You only need to extract data from the PID segment, just as you did before.

The next step is to add the 'D' character to the Discharged column.
