Step 1 - Acquiring Sample Data

In order to properly understand how HL7 messages are translated to and from XML, you should first acquire some real-world sample data. There are generally three ways you could acquire some sample data for testing.

Option	Method	Description
1	Obtain messages from the originator.	Try to get some sample HL7 messages emailed to you from the message originator.
2	Acquire your own messages.	You could use the HL7 Listener to listen on a network port to retrieve HL7 messages and log them to a text file.
3	Use sample messages.	The Chameleon install directory contains some sample messages you could use to test the XML translation functionality.

For the purposes of this tutorial you will be using the following sample message that can be found in the Chameleon install directory:
