Tutorial Specifications

As already stated, the desired functionality of the application that you are re-designing has been established. Your application is already an HL7 message parser and consumer. The only thing you need to do is add another configuration to handle ORM^O01 messages. However, it would still be helpful to have a more specific objective in view.

As such, the specifications for your application are as follows:

• It should be able to parse SIU^S12 as well as ORM^O01 messages on the same port.
• When these types of messages are received, the following information will be extracted: MSH information, PID information and PV1 information. Any other data will be ignored.
• The extracted data will be processed. In your case, you will simply display the extracted data on the screen.
• The application will be written in C++. This choice is purely arbitrary and does not materially affect any of the design choices that are discussed.
