High Availability

Software is a game of inches.

To better support our customers and uphold our long-term commitment, we have introduced two new, redundant licensing servers. These servers are physically separated and dedicated exclusively to licensing, ensuring greater reliability and continuity of service.

Instead of relying on a traditional SQL database, we use Git as the backend. This approach allows us to distribute the licensing infrastructure with simplicity, making it both easier to maintain and straightforward to replicate. This means our customers can trust in the ongoing stability of our services.

We embrace the philosophy of treating servers as “cattle, not pets.” By automating much of the provisioning process, we can deploy a new licensing server in approximately five minutes—minimizing downtime and disruption for our users.

The system is designed to generate license keys for all our products, including Iguana 6 license keys with log encryption support.

These investments have produced a licensing infrastructure that is not only simpler and more reliable, but also much easier to maintain, replicate, and redeploy—all with our customers’ needs and expectations in mind.

While these changes may not be glamorous, they represent real progress toward making our software sustainable and dependable for the long term.

Security

With this design, vital security updates are easier to implement and deploy. Upgrades can be performed safely, with the confidence that customers will have uninterrupted access to essential licensing features.

Separation of Concerns

We have rigorously applied the principle of separation of concerns—both in making the servers themselves self-contained and in their setup process.

Maintaining software over decades requires patience and discipline—a responsibility we take seriously in support of our customers’ ongoing needs.

A core challenge was that Iguana 6 licensing code had been replaced with Iguana X code, creating unnecessary dependencies like OpenSSL. Reducing dependencies is central to building stable, maintainable software, and we consider it essential for our customers’ long-term success.

These improvements have made the licensing logic more straightforward and easier to maintain or rebuild. We recognize and respect that our customers may not be able to upgrade quickly, and we’re committed to supporting the versions they rely on for as long as possible.
