Reflections on the Evolution of Our Build System
The genesis of our build system was rooted in the traditions carried forth from Microsoft Visual Studio. In those early days, we maintained separate, static project files such as *.dsp for Windows, while Linux development unfolded through the disciplined rigors of makefiles. Both approaches, as disparate as they may seem, were united by an inherited architecture—one shaped more by convention than by necessity.
With time, our journey through various iterations of build systems revealed unexpected complexities. Vendors such as Microsoft and Apple rarely treated backward compatibility as sacrosanct, and their evolving tools introduced a subtle chaos—especially in the form of conflicting compilation flags for the C Runtime libraries. These divergences, if not vigilantly managed, could render a C++ application on Windows perilously unstable. Subtle mismatches in build flags became the source of inscrutable crashes: silent failures that consumed untold hours in careful diagnosis.
This experience impressed upon me the quiet, foundational importance of determinism in build systems. Inconsistency—however minor—could undermine the entire structure, turning maintenance into a difficult endeavor. I learned, sometimes painfully, to safeguard against careless hands and to labor over details that others might overlook.
At one point, a capable developer crafted a new, cross-platform build system. Its specifics have faded in my memory, but I recall that this system, too, was eventually replaced. Its successor was assembled by a developer of notably lesser discipline and insight—a reminder that not all hands are suited for work at the foundation. In critical infrastructure, trust and competence are non-negotiable virtues.
Such is the way with core systems: they quietly underpin our projects, demanding fidelity to principle, perseverance, and perhaps a touch of humility in the face of their complexity. Developers, after all, are not interchangeable cogs but stewards of invisible but essential order.
