Human DNA
- Human DNA is the molecule that carries our genetic instructions.
- It is organized into 23 pairs of chromosomes (46 total) in most cells.
- Each person inherits half their DNA from their mother and half from their father.
- The human genome consists of about 3 billion base pairs.
- About 99.9% of human DNA is identical from person to person; the remaining differences account for individual uniqueness.
So all you racists out there. Fact is all human beings emerged from Africa. Some of like my immediate ancestors left a little earlier and lost our tan. But we are like dogs - quite compatible. You can in fact breed a Rotweiller with a chiwawha even if the physical logistics are .... challenging. There are only a few genes which effect skin color. One re-assurance I have that when I date someone like [Subrina](/incest/subrina.md] at least I have the re-assurance she's not close family.
Now, let’s bring up the concept of pedigree collapse:
When we look at human ancestry, it might seem at first like each generation back doubles the number of ancestors. For example: two parents, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents, and so on. However, this isn't sustainable over many generations—going back just 10 generations suggests over 1,000 ancestors, and a few hundred more would yield more ancestors than have ever existed!
This is where pedigree collapse comes in. Pedigree collapse occurs when ancestors occupy multiple slots in your family tree because distant relatives marry each other (even unknowingly). This means that, instead of having completely unique ancestors in every branch, some individuals appear multiple times. In reality, human populations have always been relatively small and interconnected, so many lines of descent "collapse" onto the same people.
Fact is most people have trouble tracing their geneology back more that 3 generations.
You could say incest has been a long proud part of our culture for many many generations. Indeed in small historically isolated places like the Cayman Islands have had more than their fair share of close inbreeding. It's actually pretty vital to the health of this place that there are a lot of immigrants. It's necessary. Two interesting points are raised here:
- How distant does a relative have to be before it's a good idea to date them?
- How distant does a relative have to be before it's a good idea to eat them?
Lol - it's all about what you put in your mouth, one way or another! I do standup comedy and that was one of my routines.
In short:
While your family tree grows rapidly as you trace it back generations, pedigree collapse means that your actual number of unique ancestors is far smaller than the hypothetical math would suggest. This is a natural result of human population sizes and social structure throughout history.
