Paul Conyngham is a Sydney-based Australian AI and technology entrepreneur. His personal story took a unique turn when his dog, Rosie—a spirited eight-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier–Shar Pei cross—was diagnosed with aggressive mast cell cancer after earlier misdiagnoses. Despite surgery, chemotherapy, and additional treatments, Rosie's cancer continued to progress.

A Pioneering Approach to Treatment

What makes Rosie's story remarkable is not just the treatment itself, but the collaboration and innovation involved:

1. Genomic Sequencing

   • Conyngham funded sequencing of both Rosie's normal DNA and her tumor DNA.

2. AI-Powered Analysis

   • Using AI tools—including ChatGPT and AlphaFold—Conyngham analyzed the genomic data to identify neoantigens: mutated proteins unique to Rosie's cancer that could potentially be targeted by her immune system.

3. Bringing in the Experts

   • Instead of trying to develop a treatment on his own, Conyngham connected with experts at the University of New South Wales, specifically the Ramaciotti Centre for Genomics and the RNA Institute.
   • Researchers reviewed the data and designed a personalized, experimental mRNA vaccine encoding several of Rosie's tumor-specific mutations.

4. Treatment and Supervision

   • Under veterinary research oversight, Rosie received the vaccine, along with booster doses and other cancer care interventions.

• Tumor Response: Most of Rosie's tumors reportedly shrank substantially—by approximately 75%, according to some reports.
• Improved Wellbeing: Rosie’s mobility and energy saw notable improvements.
• Next Steps: Because one resistant tumor remained, the team developed a second-generation, personalized vaccine targeting additional mutations.

Great stuff. But it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see we are not all that far away from a world where a small group or even an individual with sufficient dedication could use this same technology for a much less heart warming outcome. No I am not that person.

But I can see how it will inevitably happen. The only question is will humanity be ready when the inevitable happens. You cannot stop this from being done. The only thing that can be done is to be ready with the counter solution.
